I'm sure Simmer doesn't appreciate all the requests for chicken soup and foot massages. Oh yeah, and the Kings miss you. They're doing fine without you so far but they'll be even better WITH you. I'm sure Greener is trying not to take it personally that the first game you missed was his first game back. Bitterness between former housemates? Is there tension? Greener did saw Simmer's shoe in half once.... it's all coming together now.

The Sabres won! They did all sorts of stuff right! Myers scored! Vanek scored his first of the season! What a weight lifted off his shoulders! They had lots of shots on goal! Miller looked sharp in net! No one got hurt! Pommer is coming back soon! All is well in the land of the Sabres fan this morning. We shall never again mention that five game "slide." It's all "W" from here on out! Woooo!

Then the Kings won too! Hooray! Okay, it wasn't the same type of domination that the Sabres handed the Thrashers last night, but they managed to pull out a 4-3 victory against the Hurricanes with Bernier in net. Woo! Greener has been cleared for full "hockey activities," now that he's recovered from his harrowing ordeal with "lace bite." Oh yeah, and that whole, ya know, shoulder surgery thing, but LACE BITE?! How did he survive?

Things are looking good!

BUT, of COURSE. Just when both of my teams seemed to have a good night, THIS has to happen:

After the game, Terry Murray said Drew Doughty would not accompany the Kings to Phoenix, but left open the possibility that Doughty would join the team later in the trip. Murray did not elaborate on Doughty’s upper-body injury, other than to say that it took place during the first-period collision with Erik Cole. Doughty was not available for comment after the game.

Wooo Awards Show!

In moves that surprised exactly no one, Tyler Myers and Ryan Miller won their respective awards last night at the NHL Awards show. They were both adorably excited in their acceptance speeches, Millsy was more nervous than I expected he would be, and both wrote down their speeches. I'm not sure if Tyler got to thank everyone but I hope some day he'll have the chance to thank more people when he wins another NHL award some day. ;) I loved the personalized shoutout to Patty Lalime from Miller at the end of his speech.

Millsy also won the NHL Foundation award which gave him an engraved glass block and $25,000 for the Steadfast Foundation. 

Sadly, Drew Doughty did not win the Norris. On the plus side, he looked really good, like maybe he's working out (imagine that!). I'm sure that Dewey will win the Norris at least once, if not many more times in his career, so I'm not worried. He and Tyler can alternate winning it for the next 20 or so years. :)

Props to Marty St. Louis for having his notes on his Blackberry instead of on paper. Props to Duncan Keith for thanking everyone he's ever met and running WAYYYY over time. When Duncs went back to the media room he realized he didn't get a chance to thank Seabrook and he felt bad. Their bromance is unending. Jose Theodore won the Masterton and told people that GM George McPhee told him he wasn't be re-signed. He has all the makings of the Sabres' back-up. Good looking, French Canadian, great starter for a short time in the past, but now stinks. Perfect.

The show itself wasn't as awful as in previous years. That stupid bit with Jamie Kennedy and D.B. Sweeney before the Vezina was announced was unnecessary, but that video with Bobby Ryan and Ryan Getzlaf (feat. Scott Niedermayer) was fantastic. It was fine until Jay Mohr started doing impressions, really.

Some of the performances were a bit... unexpected, but that's why God invented the mute button.

So proud! Congrats boys!

More Nominations

Adding to the NHL Award nominations, the Norris trophy, given to the league's top defenseman, nominees were announced today.

Clearly none of the Sabres were nominated because when was the last time a rookie d-man was nominated for the Norris? Myers was the best rookie but not the league's best defenseman. I love him anyway.

But! One of these boys was nominated for the Norris: Drew Doughty!

Go get 'em tiger!

Tonight the Sabres hope to stave off elimination and the Kings look to regain the series lead.

That was worth staying up for.

Being a Kings fan on the East coast is a big commitment. Their games frequently start at 10:00pm or 10:30pm EST. That's a late start to the evening and will only become more difficult after I finish school and have, like, a real job and stuff.

However, since I am currently in the midst of my winter break, I have no constraints on my time and have no problem staying up until games end at 1:15 a.m. Last night's game was definitely worth it.

The Kings rolled in to the Sharktank for their last game in San Jose of the season looking to collect at least a point for the third straight game, and collect two points they did.

The Kings blasted out to a 6-0 start that began in the first period and ended 13 seconds into the third.

The Sharks started things off with some excitement:

I guess from that point on Nabby thought Blake was tending goal.

Nabby allowed five goals on just 16 shots over the first 40 minutes

Thomas Greiss allowed goal #6 on the Kings 17th shot, the first shot he saw.

That Blake kick save was the last good thing the Sharks saw all night, the rest of the night looked a lot like this:

Handzus, Moller, Kopitar, Smyth, Simmonds and Parse all scored

Drew Doughty had FOUR assists on the night, on each of the Kings' first four goals including two on the powerplay.

Jonathan Quick made 45 saves on the 47 shots he saw as the Sharks nabbed two late goals in a feeble attempt at a comeback(?). The Sharks outshot the Kings 47-20. That is a bit unnerving but I'll take it anyway.

Early penalties cost the Sharks. After Zeus made it 1-0, Jumbo Joe took a penalty because he was being pissy that Dewey was pestering him and the Kings scored. THEN Patrick Marleau had an EPIC brain fart. During the Thornton penalty, Dan Boyle lost his stick or broke it (I'm not sure which)  while blocking a shot and, as is expected, one of the higher forwards on the penalty kill gave him their stick. The defenseman in front of the net should never be without a stick; give him one. HOWEVER, it is against the rules to THROW your stick during play, be it to your teammate or not. Marleau decided to toss his stick to Boyle, causing great confusion and the Kings scored. Then, to make matters worse, Marleau's stick-toss got the Kings another two minutes of powerplay time and they scored once again to make it 3-0.

Final score: Kings 6, Sharks 2.

Woooooo! I love the Kings. I got the tickets for the game in Nashville on March 30 in the mail yesterday!! :) :) :) So excited!

Kings, STOP LOSING but there are happy things too

The Kings have now lost four in a row and lost last night to the Calgary Flames. There were only bursts of any kind of real game play.

There were tons o' penalties and fights and trading powerplay opportunities but for all that the score ended 2-1, Flames. Scott Parse scored the Kings' only goal. Good job, Scooter.

Dustin Brown was inexplicably awarded a penalty shot but the hockey gods made up for that bogus call when he just as inexplicably lost control of the puck as he skated in on Kiprusoff.

Ok, that was sucky but there is much happier Kings news to discuss:

DREW DOUGHTY WAS NAMED TO THE TEAM CANADA OLYMPIC SQUAD!!

Yay!

From his interviews where he talked about what he did when he heard about his selection as the 7th defenseman:

"...I woke up Brownie right away, my roommate, and told him, and I started calling everyone in the family.”

Hahaha, Brownie, his likely future opponent on Team USA.  I'm sure he was thrilled to be awakened by this news. No, but really he was probably happy for him, as happy as one can be when they first wake up.

I'm so excited for him, especially because he got the nod and Mike Green didn't! I hate Mike Green. No Phaneuf either! Woo! Although there is Pronger...

In TOTALLY RELEVANT TO EVERYTHING news, I got a pedicure yesterday. Ok that part isn't relevant but I saw Chris Butler and Steve Montador at the movies together. I loves me a good hockey bromance.

I can't wait for the Team USA roster to be announced on January 1!

Oh Snap.... those interminable goalless droughts

Wa-hoo! The Kings picked up where the Sabres left off and decided to keep body and soul together and beat the San Jose Sharks 5-4 in OT.

Erik Ersberg is still an AHL caliber goaltender but his teammates scored enough so that didn't matter.

Teddy Purcell, Anze Kopitar and Dustin Brown all snapped lengthy (10+) streaks of games without a goal and helped the Kings win it. Wooo! Drew Doughty had two points (1+1) and Jarret Stoll also scored and was a +3. Hot.

Brownie scored the game-winner in OT and the Kings improve to 13-0-0 when leading after two periods.

Um, Jack? Anze?

Maybe don't crash into each other.

Monday WTF

Ok, look Buffalo, it SNOWS, get over it and drive like NORMAL PEOPLE DRIVE WITH OUT THE SWERVING AND THE PANIC AND THE CARRYING ON LIKE THE APOCALYPSE IS NIGH.

It took me friggin' forever to get to the Arena tonight. I'm supposed to punch in by 5:30 and be on the councourse peddlin' my wares by 6:00. I walked into the Arena at 5:55. And I left a few minutes earlier than normal. Downtown Buffalo was a madhouse. It's like we've never seen snow before.

Then, to make matters worse, most of the Sabres were also stuck in traffic and didn't show up for the game.

Hey, looky there, Martin Brodeur got himself a record-tying shutout. Good thing most of the Sabres weren't there to see it.

So, the Kings played tonight as well. They hosted Jarome Iginla and the Flames. The last time they played the Flames, Iggy had a hat trick and they lost 5-2. Ouch. However, this time, things were different.

The Kings welcomed Rob Scuderi back from his ankle sprain with a 2-1 victory. Hooray! Davis Drewiske sat this one out, so Greener was paired with OD to start the night. By the end of the night things were quite jumbled, but I've always enjoyed the idea of a Greener-Sean O'Donnell pairing. I expected Greener and OD to play in the usual 16-17 Greener time zone, but OD played 23:04 and Greener played 21:41. More than usual ice time for both. Well done, boys. I'm not sure I'd want to skate in between those two. OD is 6'4" 237 lbs, and Greener is 6'3" and also 237lbs. Ouch. Greener was out on the ice against Iggy a number of times and it seemed effective. Iggy was a -1 but managed 4 SOG and 0 points on the night.

Jonathan Quick made 26 saves, Scott Parse and Jarret Stoll scored for the Kings. The defense was solid tonight as several players including Rob Scuderi and Brad Richardfail bailed Quickie out on a few messy rebounds.

I won't even bother looking up Sabres photos considering none of them played tonight. Although Lindy did mention making up for some kind of lack of work after the game. I'm guessing those players that were stuck out in snow banks finally made it for the after-game practice. Oh well, wonder what happened to them?

Also, I love Wayne Simmonds. Just putting it out there.

Thursday's Sabres game was totally awesome and just FLEW by. There were so few stoppages in play, that we were all to our cars by 9:30. I wasn't really complaining.

The Sabres won 6-2 to improve to 16-7-2 on the season. Wooo! Goals were scored by Grizz, Pommer, Royzie, Kennedy, Reggie and Mikey. Tim Kennedy needs a boss nickname, stat. Yes, boss.

I swear to you the entire first period was played in front of Jaroslav Halak. They just awarded the Habs three shots on goal out of pity.

All in all the game was pretty much all Sabres. It's kind of a miracle that the Habs even managed to score two goals.

On the downside, Sir Christopher sprained his ankle while stooping as a lady passed or something and might miss some time. Lindy implied that it didn't seem to be too bad, but that was just what he thought, there was no official word. We have 89 defensemen so I think we'll be ok. Also, this might give Sir Christopher a chance to sit down for a while and look at his game to see what he can improve upon.

Myers and Tallinder were both +3, Vanek had the most points with 3 (0+3) while playing on  a line with Kennedy and Grier which has shown some life as that line produced six points and was a +5. Pommer, Sekera and Grier each had a goal and an assist. Patty K fought his old BFF Paul Mara. I didn't see that one because if it happens in the last couple minutes of a period, I'm not going to see it, generally.

Teammate: Dude, I think they're underage

Monty: Yeah but HOW underage we talking? Like Dakota Fanning underage or like Miley Cyrus underage?

Reggie's face screams: "I LOVE YOU MAN."

The Kings beat the Senators to improve to 17-10-2. Anytime the Senators lose is a good time, especially when one of my teams beats them. The game was all-in-all in the Senators favor in every area except the scoreboard. The Kings never once gave up the lead and improve to 11-0-0 when leading after two. Dewey scored the game winner on an assist from Kopi who needs to start scoring, if only for my fantasy team.

Wayne Simmonds scored on the Kings' first penalty shot of the season and Brad Richardson, aka RichardFAIL, my least favorite member of the Los Angeles Kings, actually scored his second goal in as many games. Gross but good but mostly gross. Why isn't Oscar Moller up in Los Angeles yet this season? Bench Purcell, find a way to call up Moller!

I didn't write about the Kings' game the other night, the first of the Freeway Faceoff because I was tired but they played a solid game and won 4-3. They played much better in Anaheim than they did against Ottawa but they won both and that's all that matters.

The Kings are doing better than the Bolts

I started to work on a post comparing how the two worst teams of two seasons ago are faring these days, but that turned out to be a lot of work. Basically all you need to know is the Tampa Bay Lightning are not re-building well at the Los Angeles Kings are.

We all remember the freakshow that was the free agent signing craze that went down in Tampa Bay in 2008, and look how well THAT turned out for them. Hey, it got them Victor Hedman.

Whatevs. The Kings went to Phoenix with their Papas last night and walked away with a 5-3 win.

Anze Kopitar scored first but Shane Doan managed to sneak the puck in behind Jonathan Quick with only 0.4 seconds left in the first. Ugh, that one stung. Quickie had no chance on that one. The Coyotes scored the next two goals of the game and the Kings trailed 3-1. Ryan Smyth scored in the second, Justin Williams scored early in the 3rd and Drew Doughty scored with five minutes left in the game to make in 4-3. Ryan Smyth added the insurance empty-netter in the final minute of play.

The other big positive that came out of last night's game? Kopi's three points moved him back into the scoring lead. With Ovi out week-to-week, Kopi should (hopefully) be able to put some space in between the two of them. You know when Ovi comes back, he'll be on a tear.

Tonight the Canucks play the Rangers at home and the Pens play in Anaheim. On Thursday the Pens head to Los Angeles and Rob Scuderi gets to face his former team! Woo!

No Hockey?

I think it's totally rad that the NHL has these days in which every team plays. It's cool and it makes for some interesting fantasy hockey decisions. However, what I don't enjoy is that the following day features no hockey at all.

Part of the "Super Saturday" idea is that games will need to be condensed to accommodate for the Olympic break in February, but why then do the Sabres not play again until Thursday? Their November looks almost identical to last November. Three weeks W-F-S games followed by a week of M-R-S.

December starts ramping up they have 15 games in December which is kind of a lot.

Whatevs, I don't make the NHL schedule and for this we should all be extremely grateful. I wished there was some hockey to watch to kill the bitter aftertaste of that football game.

The Bills are terrible. I watched the game at a bar with a few friends so I was slightly distracted from the game but unable to change the channel. How embarrassing was that game?

The Steelers won, it got a little closer than we would've liked but they pulled out the win and have evened up their season at 2-2.

Thank goodness for the Pens, Canucks and Kings or I'd have little hockey to watch over the next few days when I'm supposed to be doing all this "homework" I've heard people talk so much about.

By some cruel twist of fate, it is STILL pre-season. I'm not sure how but, trust me, it still is.

• The Canucks are 5-0 in the pre-season. On Monday night they jumped to an early 3-0 lead against the Flames only allow four unanswered Flames goals to trail 4-3 late in the third. Here's what happened: 10.2 seconds left - Six attackers for the Canucks. A Mason Raymond goal is disallowed because of an early whistle. Faceoff goes to the neutral zone. Game over, right?

• Daniel Sedin says NO:

He scored the tying goal with 0.2 seconds left
And THEN he scored the winning goal in the shootout

Big Bear gets all emo with displeasure

• The Sabres sent 14 players to Portland. There were no surprises. Myers, Weber, Kennedy, Gerbe, Gragnani, Enroth all remain in camp.

• Speaking of the Sabres, they'll walk the red carpet tomorrow night before the game against the Maple Leafs where no one will buy anything and I'll have no money to show for my trouble.

• The Kings beat the Islanders in Kansas City on Tuesday night. Wayne Simmonds had a fantastic game. Two goals- one short-handed- and a nifty fight:

• Sean O'Donnell earned himself a match penalty that will be reviewed by the league. Yeesh O'D.

• The Pens lost to the Maple Leafs. I didn't see much but I did see Gronk tangle with Mike Komisarek and lose. Two blonde giants that I enjoy, Gronk clearly more than Komi. Gronk had a lame-tastic shootout attempt. Eh, its ok. He was wearing an A though. :)

I absolutely love roster photo day. Who shines? Who smiles with their eyes? Who suffers from that dreaded disease Roster Photo Panic, more commonly known as RPP?

Weekend O' Pictures

I worked about a gajillion hours this weekend so I was a negligent blogger. Here now is a recap in pictures:

NHL:

Sighs.The Canucks lost a bad one to the Blackhawks. They blew a two goal lead and dropped Game 2 by a score of 6-3. Ouch. That one stung. I wasn't watching too closely as I was working and/or at a bar in which the game was on a TV that was very far away and there was no sound. Le sigh. The series is tied 1-1. On the bright side, this was the first loss of the post-season for the Canucks, and no one thought that this series would be a sweep.

Also, we tragically learned that Big Bear has a neck beard:

IIHF Worlds:

Team USA played Russia on Saturday and lost 4-1. Boooo. And Staffy cut his face in the game against France, it would seem (some of the pics from the game against France did not load when I wanted them to the other night):

But don't worry, Staffy and his uber-intense excited eyebrows were still available for Saturday's yicky loss to Russia:
