Labor Day. Pie. Stuff

by Anne

Well hey there, folks.

So here's a recap of the latest from this weekend.

I spent the entire weekend doing one of the following:

1. reading
2. sleeping
3. eating
4. playing video games
5. moving stuff around the house with Dad Jim
6. watching all 3 X-Men movies

It was QUITE a weekend. I read an entire novel cover to cover on Saturday. It was quite a feat....ok in reality it was a novel meant for like 14 year olds but it was assigned reading! I swear! I'm in a Young Adult Lit class and we had to read it! I swear! It was good though, I enjoyed it a lot. I'm awesome. I also took Jarome out for a few spins... and for those who may not have read the previous post, Jarome is the name of my new car. I also bought him an air freshener that smells like oranges.

ALSO! ON SATURDAY!

This picture is completely adorable

I went to Wegman's, that HOTBED for local Buffalo celebrities and I was greeted in the produce section by the smiling face of one Mr. Daniel Paille and Fiancee. PIE! YAY! He really was all happy and smiley looking. He made some joke about green bananas to his lady. I couldn't see her for her reaction, but one can only assume she laughed uproariously at Pie's witty banana repartee. Awwww. He's not as tall as I thought he'd be. I mean, he's tall but I was expecting him to be more giant-like.

On the real important news: analyzing the future Mrs. Pie based solely on passing her a few times in the produce section. Some definite plusses from this observation. She is not the typical tanorexic blonde barbie that is so frequently loved up by our dear beloved Buffalo Sabres. Don't misunderstand me, Mrs. Pie was quite pretty and dark featured, but was shockingly NORMAL looking in a "she will probably age well and won't suddenly look like a leathery foot when she hits 50" kind of way. I approve, and clearly my approval is PARAMOUNT.

I also noted that I didn't encounter Pie in the prepared foods section where I normally encounter Sabres. This is probably because Pie has a ladylove that cooks for him OR he can cook for himself. Awwwwww. It was warm fuzzies all around in Wegman's on Saturday afternoon. Or was it Sunday? Wait. I'm confused. Actually, it was Sunday. I'm full of lies. Sunday afternoon at Wegman's with the Pies.

Um, yes, other than that.... S(h)ara has a Sabres-related encounter from this weekend as well, but I'll let her tell the story.

In other news:

Bryan McCabe is shipping off to Florida and it'll be announced today at 11:00 am. The state of Florida is LOADING UP with new older residents from colder climes.... hmmmm maybe the retirement community has had some effect on the way GMs in Florida are signing... there could be something in this... Buffalonians do love our "blue collar work ethic" types... although the Red Wings really like their Swedes and, (correct me if I'm wrong) I don't recall there being a HOTBED for Swedish immigrants in the Motor City... I'll look into it... ok no I won't.

I am not mentioning any of the following for the time being, because I think I'll wear out my keyboard trying to analyze all my thoughts:

  1. Jason Pominville's contract
  2. Mats Sundin's career
  3. Where in the world is Carmen San Diego?
  4. Sarah Palin's baby not baby but it is her baby and then her pregnant daughter
  5. Hurricane Gustav
  6. The fact that I have an 8 am class and I'm still not over it
Anyway, I hope everyone had a grand old Labor day.

IT'S SEPTEMBER WHICH MEANS ITS ALMOST TRAINING CAMP WHICH MEANS ITS ALMOST PRESEASON WHICH MEANS ITS ALMOST THE REGULAR SEASON AND I'M ACTUALLY STARTING TO GET EXCITED AND I RARELY GET EXCITED FOR THINGS MORE THAN 20 MINUTES OR SO BEFORE THEY HAPPEN! I WILL BE RELATIVELY INDIFFERENT ABOUT THE BIRTH OF MY FIRST CHILD UNTIL THE DOCTOR SAYS "PUSH"! WOOOOO!!!!

I Only Got 4 Minutes to... Update This Blog

by Anne

I've been so FREAKIN busy this week. I barely have enough time to cheer on my OBF in the All-Around! What a terrible fate.

I'm still teaching and the show is on Friday so things are that much more ramped up, and THEN on top of that, I'm working at the shows at night at the membership table, so its a long day, from like 1:30-10:45.

That leaves precious little time for the IMPORTANT things in life, such as trying to get myself to hold off on panicking about my #1 man's contract, Mats and Joe (they should think about a buddy cop movie), Michael Phelps, men's gymnastics and how much I love almond M&Ms.

However, yesterday Jimmy, my now ELEVEN YEAR OLD (OMG WHEN DID HE GET SO OLD??!) cousin came over. Jimmy is the cousin who accompanied me to the Richard Zednick game. GREAT. He loves Ryan Miller and is convinced that Ovechkin plays for the Sabres. I never claimed he was "with it".

Anyway, I have my NHL standings tracker hanging up in my room, and Jimmy and I were reviewing NHL logos and team stars. He thought it was hysterical to constantly answer with "Pominville" or "Ovechkin" if he didn't know a players name. He also considered it hysterical to refuse to refer to Nicklas Lidstrom as anything other than Nicklas Flamel. Most importantly was the moment he couldn't remember the Vancouver "Canucks" so the word he pulled out of his 11 year old brain was the Vancouver "Cankles". In case you're wondering, I don't think Jimmy knows what "cankles" are, but I nearly wet myself laughing about a bunch of really self conscious men taking up hockey because the skates would mask their chunky ankles.

I DID purchase the Jonas Brothers album, which I'm sure you were ALL wondering about. Its pretty fun and rather enjoyable, and, yes I do occasionally feel like a creeper while listening to it. The only comfort I take is that two of them are at least 18 and the oldest one is only like 2 years younger than I am, and I don't feel quite as creeped out any more. FORTUNATELY they're all about being sexually pure or something like that until they're married so there's no risk of stumbling upon any kind of freaky sexually suggestive song being sung by a 16 year old boy who has curls that most of his female fans would kill for.

When did this become a Jonas Brothers blog? Does such a thing exist? I'm sure it does, why do I doubt that for a second? I have absolutely no interest in looking for them. I think they're going to be in Buffalo on Friday. I have to work, but I wouldn't go even if I didn't have to. I'm sure that all you hear through 90% of the concert is 14 year old girls screaming and carrying on like if they scream loud enough Nick (the 16 year old with the curls of a deity) will leap out of the audience and marry them on the spot. I can see the joint bank accounts now.

HOCKEY. WOOOOO!!!

Bryan McCabe's future is up in the air. WOW. WHAT A SHOCK, ANOTHER PLAYER WHO MAY OR MAY NOT MAKE A DECISION THAT WILL AFFECT WHERE HE'LL BE PLAYING NEXT SEASON. He Mats and Joe should just form their own band called the Indecisives and tour the world. They can visit Jagsie in Russia.

Yes Bryan, you can play the tambourine

Someone broke into Beth's (the head teacher of my classes) car last night and stole half of our costumes and stuff for our show so now I have to go find towels and bedsheets to act as weapons (yes, weapons) for our battle and some other stuff because we now are down 5 of our 10. Awesome.

Check ya later.

Welcome Aboard, Three New Players

by Anne

Ok So I figure I'll kind of acknowledge the three players we've signed recently.

First on our plate:

Colton Fretter

  • Born March 12, 1982 in Harrow, Ontario
  • Parents are Doug and Susan Fretter
  • Plays right wing
  • Shoots right
  • 5'10" 187 lbs
  • Drafted in the 8th round by the Atlanta Thrashers in 2002
  • Attended Michigan State University where he majored in kinesiology
  • Jagr is/was his favorite NHL player
  • He hits hard

  • He's never played a game in the NHL
  • His nickname is "Fretz"

Up next we have Colin Murphy

  • Born April 11, 1980 in Fort McMurray, Alberta
  • He's 6'0, 195 lbs
  • He attended Michigan Tech University
  • Plays Left Wing
  • Shoots L
  • His nickname is Murf
  • He hates waiting in traffic
  • He has a son named Easton
  • His favorite TV show is Grey's Anatomy
  • His favorite movie is 8 mile
  • Played last three seasons with the Toronto Marlies
  • He fights a lot:

  • He has also never played a game in the NHL

Finally we have Tyler Bouck:
  • Born January 13, 1980 in Camrose, Alberta
  • He was drafted 57th overall in 1998 by the Dallas Stars
  • He plays Right Wing and/or Center, different sites listed him as both
  • Shoots Left
  • Spent most of his career in the AHL but has played 91 games in the NHL
  • In the NHL he has 12 points (4+8) with 93 PIM
  • Most significantly, Tyler was the Captain of the Portland Pirates last season, so he'll be staying with the fanbase there, and I'm betting the Pirates fans are glad to see him stay. I think its a good move by management
  • Played Junior hockey for the Prince George Cougars
  • He owns a ferret named Glenn Close

That last fact may or may not have been completely made up, you be the judge.

I think I'm in a Facebook group declaring that Kris Letang does not have a Facebook profile and people want to take down the profile that claims to be him. One of the Sabres' prospects I'm friends with invited me to join. The reason I'm uncertain is that both the name of the group and group description are in French. Based on what freetranslation.com told me, I deduced the previous mentioned belief.

So Bryan McCabe is apparently willing to waive his no trade clause to consider a trade to certain teams. This is going to be a quite a different Maple Leafs team that in was in 07-08. Will they be better without Sundin if he doesn't come back? No, of course not, but they seem to be playing it smarter with the contract situations which is the first step in a slow, steady rebuilding process (cough Tampa Bay cough).

YO did anyone else see the smack talk Sean Avery laid down on the New York Rangers when he was being introduced as a new member of the Dallas Stars? He basically said that he was excited to be going to a team that was a lot better than the team he had just left. WOW. I mean, I don't think New York is great but ouch, Sean Avery, ouch.

I will say only this about the still as yet unresolved Pommer extension situation: I'm really afraid of what will happen with offer sheets if the Sabres decide to wait until then to sign him. In the past few days its crept into my mind that Larry, Darcy and Tom might be considering parting with Pommer. That thought makes me feel positively ill. Then I remind myself how public and vocal they were about taking care of his contract in this off-season before his market value sky rockets. I hope to Bob he isn't thinking about leaving us. :(

POMMER DON'T GO!!!!

No, Anne, you said August 25th. I'll push it back. Labor Day (this way its after classes have started and I won't have as much stress) is when I'll start openly fretting about my #1's contract. JJP DON'T LEAVE ME! IT RHYMES!!

IF POMMER BROUGHT BACK THIS HAIRSTYLE WOULD THAT SPEED TALKS ALONG?
I THINK WE CAN CONVINCE HIM THAT HE LOOKED HIS BEST WHEN HE ROCKED THE WHITE MAN FRO!!

I stil need 25 things don't I? I'll work on that.

Today I'm hopefully getting a new tattoo and seeing Wall-e, but unfortunately that means something will come up and I won't see it.

If I buy the Jonas Brothers new album on Tuesday, does that make me a weirdo? I kind of like them. If I were like 15 right now I guarantee you I would've been OBSESSED and Kevin would've been my favorite.... even though I couldn't remember one of their names today. It was Joe, btw.

One year ago today I adopted my KITTEN, our fearless mascot, Oscar.

Before him, I for real HATED cats
