Paeatscheshch on Waivers

by Anne

Nathan Paetsch was placed on waivers today.

I mostly don't really care. He's played like three games this season and has had flashes of relevance but mostly not.

I wasn't expecting this move but Patches is definitely a spare part that the Sabres don't need around. I mean, it's always nice to have that extra back-up player lying around but we have a lot of those. Andrej Sekera for example. We discovered recently that he, like Paetsch is a magical wizard and can play winger in addition to center. Magic I tells ya.

Not sure why he's being moved now but I'm not going to lose any sleep over it.  I get the feeling that Darcy is trying to free up a little salary cap space to make a trade or something because no one that's a UFA or an RFA next summer appears to be ready for any kind of huge salary increase. I'm no good at speculating about what I think will happen, but I know what I'd like to see happen.

I'm always on board any time any one suggests a good trade that involves Derek Roy. Get him outta here. He's not a bad player but he's a pain in the ass and we could probably get someone better if we packaged it right. I'd be down with trading pretty much any of our top six right now, provided we got a better caliber top 6 player in return. Are we going to get Ilya Kovalchuk? No, of course not. But there are several teams that will be sellers at the deadline, and if the Sabres stay where they are or even if they slip a few spots (which they won't because the rest of our division is weak) they'll be buyers.

It's too early to declare which teams are going to be sellers right now, with three months until the deadline, well except Carolina, they're clearly out of the race. Muahahaha Butter Snaps.

Whatevs, I LOVE the trade deadline and I CAN'T WAIT.

Kings play San Jose tonight at 10:30! Woo!

Catching Up

by Anne

There's much to catch up on.

  • Adam Mair cleared waivers.
  • I'm surprised no one claimed him.
  • The Sabres have the option of sending him to Portland or keeping him in Buffalo. Happily, they opted to keep him in Buffalo as our thirteenth forward :)

The dog is thrilled.

  • I lost forty pounds a few years ago and I've gained about half that back, so I'm getting back on track. Any and all unsolicited encouragement is welcome.
  • The Kings "played" a game against the Blackhawks. They lost 4-1. It was not pretty.
  • Kopi scored, Dewey got an assist and then they all pooped the bed and rolled around in it. The game was close through the first and second, you knew it was going to explode in the third and unfortunately it was the Blackhawks who decided to start scoring. :/
  • Drew Miller was put on waivers by the Tampa Bay Lightning, as was Tyler Arnason who reportedly signed a deal with a team in Europe and was subsequently suspended by the Rangers
  • After the Kings "game" last night, it looks like there might be some shakeups in the lineups and Mr. Jones may get into the lineup soon. That's good. Terry Murray didn't rule out the possibility that he'd get in tomorrow. Who sits? Greener only played 14:30ish last night. Peter Harrold already sat out last night.
  • If the Kings don't beat the Hurricanes tomorrow, I'm never speaking to them again.
  • Because the Canes are unspeakably bad, Erik Ersberg may get the start the other night. I think Quickie needs a break. He's started all but one of the Kings' 18 games.
  • Canucks play at St. Louis tonight, Pens play at Boston. Woooo!

Adam Mair on Waivers

by Anne

Maxim Afinogenov.

Nathan Paetsch.

Henrik Tallinder.

Just a few of the players we have BEGGED Darcy to trade or waive over the last two seasons. Today, he decided to do just that. He put a player on waivers.

That player: ADAM MAIR?!

Why Mairsy? I just don't understand why he was in the doghouse. I understand that we were playing fine without him, but I assumed he'd be hanging out in the pressbox with Paetsch until his services were needed. Apparently not?

Nooooo!!!

Maybe Darcy is trying to clear cap space for something? Even if we're off the hook for Mairsy's entire salary, Paille and Mairsy's combined cap hit is only $1.91 million.

Sad times.

ETA: Even though he was waived, Mair still practiced with the Sabres this afternoon. Ho-kay?

Mr. Jones and Me

by Anne

The Los Angeles Kings have claimed defenceman Randy Jones off of re-entry waivers from the Philadelphia Flyers.

The waiver order, which is tied to last year's regular season finishes was heavily in the Kings favor and they took advantage of their high waiver spot to claim Jones. Altough why they did I'm not exactly sure. The Kings took advantage before the waiver order is adjusted in a few days and, with their great start to the season, they'll be pushed waaaaay down the list.

Jones isn't exactly an offensive juggernaut, he has 69 points in 217 NHL games (13+56) along with 134 PIM. He'll clearly be the Kings 7th defenseman, but that's an upgrade from Philly where he was their 8th defenceman. With Peter Harrold apparently sticking with his new roster move to fourth line center, I guess this is ok? Alec Martinez is hurt, so it's good to have a player in reserve who has shown he's capable of putting some points on the board. In 71 games in the 2008-2008 season, Jones had 31 points in 71 games.

Apparently he was also named one of America's Most Eligible Bachelors back in 2007? Seriously? I wonder if that's a joke.

Oh, hey there, Randy.

He fits all the criteria of a seventh defenceman: somewhat useless but kinda hot.
Perfect.

Whatevs, weclome to LA, Randy Jones!

Sanford Waived?

by Anne

I was a little surprised to read that the Canucks waived Curtis Sanford in favor of keeping newly acquired Jason LaBarbera. Barbie has definitely playing like a goalie who wants to keep his job... ok except for last night when he let in 3 goals on like 5 shots or something like that. When the Canucks claimed Barbie from LA, everyone expected he'd just be there for a temporary and then would be put on waivers when Bobby Lu came back from his groin injury. Luongo should be back on Thursday to face the Coyotes at home. Oh Sanford, we knew ye well.

Kyle Wellwood looks like a serial killer that wandered off of the set of Law and Order and into some hockey pants.

Where did you hide the remains, Mr. Wellwood?

There's apparently a new city with an NHL team. Welcome to "Dalls, TX".

This is the problem with the "insta-information age." Sites are so determined to get information out that they don't take the time to edit or proof-read what they're putting out. I would much rather read a thoughtful breakdown or preview or whatevs of a game or a player or a trade than a jumbled together mishmash with typos. Typos are for blogs like this one. If you NEED to break a story, then a simple "Vinny Lecavalier has been traded to the Buffalo Sabres for a bucket of popcorn and Nathan Paetsch, more to come later." with a well-written analysis to follow is much preferred.
