Monday Morning Weekend Recap

by Anne

This weekend was highly productive.

Saturday afternoons have been the Los Angeles Kings arch-nemesis this season. I think they were 0-2-1 this season up until Saturday's 1:00(PST) game against the Washington Capitals. Fortunately, they decided to counter-act the bad juju of Saturday afternoon games by wearing their unbeatable third black jerseys. In the battle of bad Saturday afternoon juju v. the good juju of the third jerseys, the third jerseys won.

The Kings fought their way to a 2-1 regulation victory over the Caps, and left Ovi basically on the periphery the entire game.

Ryan Smyth scored the first goal and then ol' chatterbox Handzus scored a shortie to seal the deal. Wooo!

I was watching the Caps feed so of course their main subplot was Green v. Doughty and the Team Canada roster. They interviewed Green at the first intermission and his response was that he was disappointed but he wanted to prove them all wrong. Well, in the second period, he scored a powerplay goal. However, Doughty assisted on the first Kings' goal (on the powerplay) when Smyttie banked in the rebound of Douhgty's blast and was on the ice to help out for Handzus' shortie.

Green was right when he said they were different players. Doughty is an Olympian and he's not :)

After the real game there was a charity game.

Brownie and Shenae Grimes were honorary coaches
I, I don't know who Shenae Grimes is
But isn't Brownie adorable?
haha

So then, the Sabres played the Montreal Canadiens Sunday afternoon. I hate that feeling on a day when something is happening at an odd time when every ten minutes or so you suddenly lose complete track of what time it is and frantically search for the clock only to realize there are still almost two hours left to go until that event is taking place. That's what I was like Sunday in the early afternoon.

This game will not go down in the record books as the most exciting in recent memory but in a goaltending battle, one goal was the difference and Timmy was that goal scorer. Miller got his fifth shutout of the season! Woooo! He was as good as he's been all season and frankly, I was a tiny bit concerned that a nasty goal would sneak by him but the D was solid in front of him and he wasn't allowing any rebounds.

They got out to a stronger start than the last three games but that wasn't really hard to do. Vanek didn't figure in the scoring but he had his strongest game in a while. I'm liking these current line arrangements:

Hecht - Connolly - Pominville
Gaustad- Roy -Stafford
Vanek - Kennedy - Grier
Ellis - Mair - MacArthur

Well, I'm not thrilled about MacArthur earning a spot on the fourth line, but with Kaleta out, he was the only one that's earned that spot recently.

Timmy is waiting for us to join the hug

Here at the halfway point of the season the Buffalo Sabres have a seven point lead over second place Boston and are second in the conference. They'd still be second even if divisonal leaders weren't automatically seeded 1-3.
I knew they'd be doing well but not this well. Let's hope they don't burn things out!

The Kings have fallen to 3rd in the division and eighth in the conference after losing four in a row. Hopefully the win over the Caps will set them right!

  1. That HCP line is some kind of magic, that's for sure. It's great to see Hecht on his way to a good year. And we're getting our money's worth out of Timmy! Speaking of... that picture is hilarious and a tiny bit creepy. Good caption ;)

  2. Holy frightening picture, Batman. I think Timothy is staring deep into my soul.

The Sabres are doing better at this point this season than they were last season, so hurray! Let's hope they can keep it up.

Yoyo definitely needed a bounce back year and hopefully he's getting it. So far so good. Oh Timmy, I don't want to say much about him for fear it shall backfire and he'll miss 6-8 weeks with twisted leg hair or malady that can only fell Timmy.

He is, don't look too closely.

  5. Twisted leg hair? No doubt. Sorry for jinxing it.

And um, what's the status on the All-Hot lineups?

  6. Wow, Shenae Grimes was honorary coach?? Was she the only Canadian free that day? ;-)
She was on Degrassi The Next Generation, and is now on the new 90210 (is this show still on? dont know).
